Magnesium, The Master Commander

Magnesium is a mineral found in the earth, it is absorbed by the plants we use for food and medicine, and is required for health in both animals and humans. It is so essential that it has earned the title of the “Master Commander” as it is an essential component of over 600 reactions in the body.  Yet, research indicates that greater than 50% of Americans have at least some degree of subclinical magnesium levels.

Reduced magnesium levels can cause insomnia, digestive issues, high blood pressure, and sore muscles and joint pain. It is also an essential component in the energy production mechanism of our mitochondria, often called the power-house of the cell, and without it health (and life!) ceases to exist.  Supplementary magnesium has been shown to be instrumental in remedying many minor ailments and can help prevent serious chronic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Even depression and anxiety can be helped by increasing magnesium levels.  Got your interest yet?

Great foods for extra magnesium include pumpkin seeds, spinach, black beans, halibut, and almonds. However, many people with a healthy diet still need additional magnesium supplementation.  Your body uses more magnesium when you are dealing with stressful situations of all types.  Athletic performance is impacted by magnesium levels and studies show that athletes need an additional 10-20% more magnesium during exercise.  Similarly, the use of pharmaceutical drugs can significantly reduce your magnesium levels.  As you can see, low magnesium levels can occur for many reasons and are not limited to those with unhealthy lifestyle habits.

There are many different types of magnesium supplements on the market.  Some are better for one condition than another.  For instance, one form of magnesium may be better for people with cardiovascular issues, while another may be better for helping you get a good night’s rest.  Getting solid advice on the type and amount you may need , along with guidance on herb, drug, supplement interactions can save you time, money and give piece of mind. Not every supplement is appropriate for every-body, despite the feel-good message from the mass marketers.   Consider a consultation with Dr. Hendry and find out what supplements may benefit your health!
