Sugar Blues, Highs and Lows

Still reaching for sugar to boost your energy or mood? Sugar has a reputation for providing quick energy and mood elevation.  However, recent research shows it can cause more problems than it solves.  A meta-analysis of 31 studies that assessed the impact of sugar consumption on mood and energy came to the opposite conclusion. The researchers found that, despite the common belief, sugar intake decreases energy, lowers alertness, and has a negative impact on mood! Further, sugar consumption was directly associated with an increase in depression and anxiety.  Yes, you might enjoy a “sugar high” for a brief time, but the research shows sugar consumption ultimately leaves you sluggish, in a blue mood, and craving more sugar.
