"I was referred to Dr. Will Hendry after spending thousands of dollars for medical doctors and procedures regarding a digestive issue. I will never forget the amount of time he spent with me on my first visit — something that had never happened with conventional medicine."

I've had patients come in who've seen seven different specialists and left every appointment with a new diagnosis but no better explanation. Their fatigue has a name. Their gut problems have a name. Their hormone irregularities have a name. But nothing connects those names to each other, and nothing resolves.
A functional medicine consultation starts with the question that each of those appointments skipped: why is this happening? Not what do we call it — why.
Usually the answer involves two or three systems interacting. Gut dysbiosis feeding an immune response that's attacking thyroid tissue. A sluggish T4-to-T3 conversion because selenium and zinc are depleted. A cortisol rhythm that's been dysregulated for years. Standard lab panels often show these in the "normal" range. Functional reference ranges — calibrated to optimal physiology, not just absence of pathology — read the same values differently. That's where most of the useful clinical information lives: in the territory between "technically normal" and "actually well."
My setup for this is specific. I have doctoral training in Oriental medicine and apply functional medicine diagnostics in the same consultation. So a patient can leave with a herbal formula, a targeted supplement protocol, and an acupuncture treatment plan — all from one provider, built around the same lab findings. We have an in-house pharmacy. I hold an Injection Therapy certification for IV and injectable nutrient protocols. I'm not sending you to three other people to reassemble the pieces.
How Functional Medicine Consultation Works
We start with 90 minutes. That's not negotiable — there's no functional medicine consultation worth having in 20 minutes, and I don't pretend otherwise. I review your complete health history: childhood illnesses, medications, surgical history, environmental exposures, diet, sleep, stress patterns, and any prior lab work you can bring. I use a detailed symptom questionnaire that maps dysfunction across all major physiological systems — not just the chief complaint.
Based on what that intake reveals, I order targeted labs. Not just a basic metabolic panel. Depending on your presentation, that might include a full thyroid panel — TSH alone tells me almost nothing; I want free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and antibody titers. Comprehensive hormone panel. Cortisol rhythm via four-point testing. Gut microbiome analysis. Food sensitivity panel. Inflammatory markers including homocysteine and high-sensitivity CRP. Nutritional deficiency screening. Heavy metals if the history points that direction.
These run through a standard clinical lab — most insurance covers basic panels; functional panels are often self-pay. Results typically take one to two weeks. At your follow-up I walk through every result in plain language: what it means, what the functional range tells us that the conventional range misses, and what we're going to do about it.
Conditions Treated with Functional Medicine Consultation
Functional Medicine vs. Conventional Care for Chronic Conditions
A patient with hypothyroidism, fatigue, brain fog, and constipation visiting a conventional practitioner may receive a TSH test, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, and a levothyroxine prescription. The prescription may partially address the low thyroid hormone level, but if the root cause is Hashimoto's autoimmune disease (which drives over 90% of hypothyroidism in the US), and if the gut dysbiosis triggering the autoimmune reaction is untreated, and if the selenium and zinc deficiencies impairing T4-to-T3 conversion are unaddressed — the patient continues to feel unwell despite "normal" labs. Functional medicine evaluates all of these variables simultaneously and builds a protocol that addresses each one. This is why functional medicine produces lasting results for the complex, multi-system chronic conditions that challenge conventional medicine.
Research & Evidence
The functional medicine model is supported by a growing body of systems biology research. A landmark 2019 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found functional medicine patients reported significantly greater improvements in health-related quality of life at 6 months compared to matched controls receiving conventional primary care. Research on the gut-brain-immune axis, the microbiome, and epigenetics has validated the functional medicine model's emphasis on environmental and dietary influences on gene expression and disease. Dr. Hendry's integration of acupuncture into his functional medicine protocols is supported by research showing that acupuncture modulates inflammatory cytokines, HPA axis function, and gut motility — directly impacting the same physiological systems that functional medicine protocols target.
Cost & Insurance Information
Functional medicine consultations at IHP are structured as initial and follow-up appointments. Laboratory testing is ordered through standard clinical labs (most insurance plans cover basic labs; advanced functional panels may be partially covered or self-pay). We provide itemized documentation for insurance reimbursement. The functional medicine consultation fee is separate from lab costs. Call (864) 365-6156 for current pricing. Many patients find that addressing root causes through functional medicine reduces their long-term healthcare costs significantly.
Treatment Timeline
Your First Appointment
Come prepared to discuss your complete health story — the more detail you can provide, the more precise Dr. Hendry's assessment will be. If you have prior labs, bring copies. Bring a current medication list including supplements. Plan for 90 minutes of focused conversation. Some patients find it helpful to journal their symptoms and key health events in the weeks before their appointment. After the intake, Dr. Hendry will order tests that can be done at a local lab — results are typically available within 1–2 weeks, at which point your follow-up consultation is scheduled.
Why Dr. Hendry for Functional Medicine Consultation
Dr. Hendry's research background (5 peer-reviewed publications, Prisma Health hospital privileges) means he reads and evaluates the functional medicine literature with a scientist's eye — not just a practitioner's intuition. His dual training in Oriental medicine and functional medicine allows him to prescribe both evidence-based herbal formulas (from our in-house pharmacy) and targeted nutritional protocols simultaneously. As an Injection Therapy-certified practitioner, he can also administer high-dose vitamin and nutrient injections as part of your functional medicine protocol — a service unavailable at most integrative practices.
